"Ferguson, Pires and Owen fight for the prize”

The Star Sixes was an excellent event to start off the New Year and even better it was held at Scotland’s own Hydro. The event held in Glasgow started on the Friday the 4th of January and was concluded on the following Sunday with the “auld” enemy becoming the champions. The England team that gained the crown was captained by no other than Michael Owen.

Even though Scotland didn’t win the whole tournament they can hold their heads up high as they played well and put on a great show for the hundreds of fans who attended. The Scotland team was captained by Barry Ferguson and had players such as Lee McColloch, James McFadden and Rab Douglas. Scotland did have the crowd behind them as they were the home team but were unable to reach the final but did get a shock victory against the eventual winners England.

There was more than just Scotland and England playing in the tournament, the Rest of the world team captained by the invincible Robert Pires played excellent but to only tumble at the final hurdle and get defeated off England but they were playing some great football for the majority of the weekend which started with a Pires hattrick in the opening match. The other teams weren’t just there to fill up the numbers either the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland teams played good for the most part and Wales were able to put up a good fight even though their star man Ryan Giggs whose is both captain of the Star Sixes team and manager of the national team had to pull out of the event through a poorly timed injury.

Even though England won the event was a huge success and it was great to see Scotland host a football tournament in one way or another
