Stadiums of Scotland

1. Aberdeen FC- Pittodrie Stadium 

Capacity- 20,866

Pittodrie is the home of Aberdeen. The closest train station to the stadium is Aberdeen station which is an approximately 30-minute walk to the stadium or a 15-minute bus journey. This is the fourth largest stadium in the SPFL and has been Aberdeen’s home since there origin in 1903.

2. Airdrieonians FC- Penny Cars Stadium 

Capacity- 10,101

Penny Cars Stadium previously known as the Excelsior Stadium is the home of Airdrieonians FC. The stadium is in Airdrie and is an artificial pitch there are two train stations close to the stadium with one being Airdrie station and the other being Drumgelloch station. Drumgelloch is a 19-minute walk to the stadium and Airdrie is a 23-minute walk or a 10-minute bus journey.

3. Albion Rovers FC- The Reigart Stadium'

Capacity- 1,572

Cliftonhill Stadium is what the stadium is originally called but has been renamed The Reigant Stadium for sponsorship purposes and is currently being occupied by Albion Rover. They have played at this ground since 1919. This stadium has both standing and seating options and previous tenants of the Clifton Stadium have been Dumbarton FC and Hamilton Academical FC. The closest train stations are Whifflet, Coatbridge central, Coatbridge sunnyside and Coatdyke. Coatdyke is the closest with it only being a 10-minute walk. The others are around a 20-minute walk or 15-minutes by bus.

 

4. Alloa Athletic FC- Indodrill Stadium

Capacity- 3,100

Recreation Park commonly known as “The Rec” is the stadium of Alloa Athletic. Currently called Indodrill Stadium for sponsorship reasons. The pitch is artificial so allows teams to share the pitch such as BSC Glasgow and Central Girls Football Academy. The closest railway stations to the ground is Alloa station which is a short 12-minute walk away from the ground.

5. Annan Athletic FC- Galabank

Capacity- 2,504

Galabank is the home of Annan Athletic and has been since they moved here in 1953. The stadium is a mixture of both seating and standing with 500 seats available. The stadium uses an artificial pitch and is shared by Edusport Academy. The stadium is a 15-minute walk from the closest station which is Annan station.

6. Arbroath FC- Gayfield Park

Capacity- 6,600

Gayfield is the stadium of Arbroath FC and has been since there origin and it has over 800 seats to go with the standing areas. The closest railway station is Arbroath station which is about 10 to 15-minute walk from the ground.

 

7. Ayr United FC- Sommerset Park 

Capacity- 10,185

Somerset park home of “The Honest Men” Ayr United. The stadium has been used by Ayr since 1910 which is when they were founded. The record attendance was a game against Rangers in 1969 of 25,225. The closest railway stations to the ground are Newton-on-Ayr station and Ayr station and are 13 minutes and 20 minutes away by walking or 9 minutes on the bus from Ayr station.

8. Berwick Rangers FC- Shielfield Park

Capacity- 4,099

Berwick Rangers are the only team that play in Scotland who are from outside of Scotland as their ground is situated very close to the border. The stadium is shared with the Berwick Bandits who are a speedway team. The closest station is Berwick-upon-Tweed station with is a 30-minute walk from the ground or 15 by bus.

 

9.Brechin City FC- Glebe Park

Capacity- 4,083

Glebe Park is the home ground of Brechin City who play in Brechin. The ground opened its gates in 1919. The closest railway link to Glebe Park is Brechin train station and is 5-minute bus journey or a 13-minute walk from Glebe Park.

 

10. Celtic FC- Celtic Park

Capacity- 60,411

At an enormous 60,411 this is not only the biggest stadium in Scotland it is one of the biggest stadiums in Britain. The stadium has been Celtics home since 1892 and has seen some of the best games in the history of Scottish football. Celtic Park is commonly called Parkhead and Paradise. The closest railway link to the stadium is Dalmarnock station which is approximately 15-minutes’ walk from the stadium and the ground is only 30-minutes’ walk away from the city centre of Glasgow.

 

11. Clyde FC- Broadwood Stadium

Capacity- 8,086

This is one of the newer stadiums in Scotland opening its doors in 1994. The stadium is used for more than just football and is shared by Clyde and Cumbernauld colts. The pitch is AstroTurf as are the several 5 aside pitches that can be use by the public and Broadwood is also home to the Scottish Rugby Association for Glasgow and the West. The ground is around 20-minutes’ walk from Croy station.

12. Cowdenbeath FC- Central Park

Capacity- 4,309

This is Central Park the stadium that has been Cowdenbeath’s Stadium since its opening in 1917. Cowdenbeath Railway station is only five minutes away from the stadium. This is also a multi-use stadium and is currently being used for stock car racing.

13. Dumbarton FC- C&G Systems Stadium

Capacity- 2,020

This is the third smallest stadium in the SPFL but that doesn’t deter it from having one of the best nicknames in Scottish football, “The Rock” commonly known as no not Dwayne Johnson or even Alcatraz prison but Dumbarton Stadium is another new stadium built in 2000. The closest transport links to the ground is Dumbarton East railway station which is about 7-minutes’ walk from the stadium.

 

14. Dundee FC- Kilmac Stadium at Dens Park

Capacity- 11,775

Kilmac Stadium at Dens Park due to sponsorship reasons is the ground of Dundee. Dens Park as the stadium is normally known is on the same road as their rival’s stadium. The record attendance of Dens Park was set by Rangers and Dundee in 1953 and that attendance was 43,024.

15. Dundee United FC- Tannadice Park

Capacity- 14,223

At the other end of Sandeman road there is Tannadice which has been the home of Dundee United since they began in 1909. The transport links to both these stadiums are very similar as they are only a couple of hundred yards apart from each other making them the closest stadiums in Britain at senior level. They are half an hour walk from the closest station which is Dundee station.

 

16. Dunfermline- East End Park

Capacity- 11,480

The stadium opened in 1885 and the closest rail way links to East End Park are Dunfermline Town and Dunfermline Queen Margert which are both 20-minute walks away from the ground or 15 by bus.

17. East Fife FC- Bayview Stadium

Capacity- 1,980

This is one of the smallest stadiums in the SPFL. The stadium is now an artificial pitch and holds of the fans in a single stand. The transport links to the stadium are not great as the closest railway station is around eight miles away from the stadium but the stadium is easy to find by car as it is so close to the sea front.

 

18. Edinburgh City FC- Ainslie Park

Capacity- 3,500

This is the stadium of Edinburgh City FC because their usual stadium of Meadowbank is being redeveloped. The stadium has transport links from both Edinburgh Waverly and Edinburgh station buts is around 30m by bus from both.

 

19. Elgin City FC- Borough Briggs

Capacity- 4,520

As this stadium is the home of Elgin City FC the stadium is in Elgin making it the furthest north stadium in the UK for a football league team. Around ten percent of the seats at the stadium are seated. The stadium is located 20-minutes’ walk from Elgin train station.

20. Falkirk FC- Falkirk Stadium

Capacity- 7,937

Falkirk stadium was opened in 2004. The stadium is split up into three completed formed and seated stands with one of the stands being modified in 2009 as the others were modified in 2005, Falkirk play on an artificial pitch and it is one of the best artificial pitches in Scotland. The stadium is just off the M9 motor so is easy to get to by car. The stadium is a 10-minute bus journey from the nearest station which is Falkirk Grahamston.

 

21. Forfar Athletic FC- Station Park

Capacity- 6,777

Another AstroTurf pitch lies in Forfar which is Station Park. The ground is shared by Forfar Athletics and Forfar Farmington FC who are a team that play in the Scottish woman’s premier league. The stadiums name doesn’t do it credit anymore when it comes to closest stations as it is 14 miles away from the closest train stations. Its around an hour to get to the stadium by bus from Dundee station.

 

22. Hamilton Academical FC- The Hope CBD Stadium

Capacity- 6,018

One part of the Lanarkshire derby is Hamilton Academical commonly known as Hamilton Accies who play at New Douglas Park. The stadium is 1 of three that play in the top division that have an artificial pitch.  the stadium is very close to Hamilton West train station and it can be walked in about 6-minutes.

 

23. Heart of Midlothian Football Club- Tynecastle Park

Capacity- 20,099

Another Edinburgh venue this is Tynecastle home to the famous “Jam tarts”. There have been 9 matches played at this ground by the Scotland national team. There are rumours that Tynecastle could be getting improvements that would also increase the capacity of the stadium. The stadium has a train station 20- minutes’ walk or 10 minutes bus away which is Haymarket station.

24. Hibernian FC- Easter Road Stadium

Capacity- 20,421

Now over to the green site of Edinburgh and this stadium beats its local rivals by only a couple of hundred extra seats. The stadium had its record attendance match in 1950 with an Edinburgh derby game against rivals’ heart and the turnout was 65,860. The stadium is relatively close to Edinburgh city centre and is only a half an hour walk from Edinburgh station.

25. Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC- Caledonian Stadium, Inverness

Capacity- 7,512

The stadium is known for being the home of Inverness Caledonian Thistle, but the attendance records have been set by concert acts. Notable people who have played at the venue is Elton John and Sir Rod Stewart. The stadium is easy to find as it is just off the M9 motorway and is very close to the sea. The closest train station is Inverness station which is a short bus journey or a 30- minute walk away from the stadium.

 

26. Kilmarnock FC- Rugby Park

Capacity- 18,128

Another top-flight team that plays with an AstroTurf park. This stadium may confuse people as it is called Rugby Park, yet it is the home of a Scottish football team.  The ground is split into 4 all seated stands. The stadium is a less than 20- minute walk from Kilmarnock station which has excellent links to both Glasgow and Ayr.Stadium is called Rugby park as it was one the home of a rugby team.

27. Livingston- Tony Macaroni Arena 

Capacity- 9,713

Almondvale Stadium is the normal name, but it is named the Tony Macaroni Arena for sponsorship reasons. This is the final stadium in the top division that plays with an artificial pitch. the train links are both about thirty minutes’ walk from the ground which are Livingston North and South stations, but the bus terminal is only 5-minutes’ walk from the stadium.

 

28. Montrose FC- Links Park

Capacity- 4,936

Links Park is the stadium of Montrose. This has been Montrose’s home since 1887 and is an artificial pitch. the closest train station to Links Park is Montrose station which is a quarter of an hour walk from stadium.

29. Morton FC- Cappielow Park

Capacity- 11,589

Just over half of the capacity for Morton’s stadium is seated. This has been there home since 1879. The stadium is very close to Cartsdyke train station it can be walk in about 5 minutes and the stadium is easy to find as it is close to several main roads and is close to both the sea and Port Glasgow.

 

30. Motherwell FC- Fir Park

Capacity- 13,677

One of the stands at this stadium is named after Davie Cooper who  is a Motherwell and Rangers legend. With another stand being named after a former Motherwell player Phil O’Donnell. The stadium is 15-minutes walk away from Motherwell station.

31. Partick Thistle FC- Energy Check Stadium at Firhill

Capacity- 10,102

Firhill is the ground of Patrick Thistle and has been since 1909. The ground has also been used over the years by Rugby team Glasgow Warriors. The closest train station which is a 15- minute walk from Firhill is Maryhill station.

 

32. Peterhead FC- Balmoor Stadium

Capacity- 3,150

The stadium of Peterhead FC has got one thousand seats and the remaining fans are standing. The stadium has the furthest distance in Britain from a railway station with the closest being 32 miles away which is Aberdeen station.

33. Queen of the South FC- Palmerston Park

Capacity- 8,690

Palmerston Park has been the home ground of Queen of the South since 1919. This is another ground that is close to the English border as it is in Dumfries. This also has an artificial park. The closest station to Palmerston Park IS Dumfries station which is situated 15- minutes’ walk away from the ground. The area of Dumfries is also nicknamed Queen of the South.

34. Queens Park FC- Hampden Park

Capacity- 51,866

This is an interesting one as this is the National stadium and has a massive 51,866 making it the second biggest football stadium in the country. The most famous goal ever scored in the stadium is the goal Zidane scored in the final of the 2002 Champions league final with some calling it the best goal in the tournament’s history. Hampden set the world record for attendance in a European international match when 149,415 people went to see Scotland vs England in 1937. The closest station to Hampden is Mount Florida station which is about 5- minutes from the ground but gets extremely busy on match days so Croosmyloof is a better station to go to which is about 20 minutes walk.

35. Raith Rovers FC- Starks Park

Capacity- 8,867

The stadium uses a synthetic pitch and is now an all seater stadium. The stadium is nicknamed the “San Starko” by the Raith Rovers fans. The railway links are excellent as you can see the ground whilst travelling on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen line and the ground is 20-minute walk from Kirkcaldy train station.

36. Rangers FC- Ibrox Stadium

Capacity- 50,817

Ibrox is one of the most famous stadiums in Scotland. It is the third biggest stadium in Scotland. The stadium is split up into several stands with two of the stands being named after a famous player or manager. There is the Sandy Jardine stand and the Bill Struth main stand.  The closest transport links to the ground would be the Ibrox subway station but that does get very busy on match days a better way to go is either walk to Dumbreck station which is a 20-minute walk from the ground or you could just walk straight into the city of Glasgow with it being a 30-minute walk to Glasgow central station.

37. Ross County FC- Global Energy Stadium

Capacity- 6,541

Global Energy Stadium is the home of Ross County. The stadium is usually called Victoria Park. The ground was opened in Dingwall in 1929. The closest transport link to the stadium is Dingwall station which is only a 3-minute walk from the ground.

38. St Johnson FC- McDiarmid Park

Capacity- 10,696

McDiarmid Park has been the home stadium of St Johnson football club since 1989. The stadium only caused £4.9 Million to be built. The closest train station to McDiarmid Park is Perth station which is around 25- minutes by bus.

39. St Mirren FC- Simple Digital Arena

Capacity- 7,937

The Simple Digital Arena or St Mirren Park is the stadium home to St Mirren. This ground replaced Love Street. Next to the stadium there is a seven aside pitch which is enclosed in an Airdome which can be rented out by the public. The stadium very close to Paisley St James stadium and can be walked to in around 2 minutes with the next station being 15 minutes’ walk away which is Paisley Gilmore Street station.

           

40. Stenhousemuir Football Club- Ochilview Park

Capacity- 3,746

Ochilview Park has been Stenhousemuir’s stadium since it opened in 1890 and is now another ground that used an artificial surface. The ground hold three thousand seven hundred and forty-six people with 626 of these positions being seated. The closest train link to the stadium is Larbart Station which is approximately 15-minutes’ walk away.

41. Stirling Albion FC- Forthbank Stadium

Capacity- 3,308

The Forthbank Stadium is a stadium that is situated in the town of Stirling hence why Stirling Albion play at the ground. The stadium opened in 1993 ad has housed “The Binos” ever since. The stadium is around one and a half miles away from Stirling station and is wasy to get to by car as it is close to the M80.

 

42. Stranraer- Stair Park

Capacity- 4,178

Stair Parks residents are Stranraer FC. 1,830 seats are to be found inside the stadium and the remaining fans must stand. The ground opened in 1907. The closest rail link to the stadium is Stranraer train station which is located by the water and is around 20-minutes’ walk from Stair Park.
