Fans vs Writer

My Scottish Football XI

This segment is referring to the writer’s best team ever in the Scottish top flight against a fan best 11. I will be playing a four four two formation.

Writers team

GK- Andy Goram

Andy Goram is my choice because he was a world class goal keeper even though he was under six foot. He played for several clubs in Scotland but most memorably he played for Hibs and then went on to have great success at Rangers where he won 5 leagues, 3 Scottish cups and 2 Scottish league cups.

LB-John Greig

John Greig only played for Rangers throughout his lengthy career, voted the greatest ever Rangers player by the fans. John Greig played over 700 hundred times for Rangers and has the record for league appearances at Rangers with 496. He led Rangers to there first European trophy which was the European cup winners’ cup in 1972. Greig was also the captain of Rangers and has a statue outside of the stadium. Greig has also went on to manage Rangers between 1978 and 1983.

As well as winning nine in a row, Gough won three Scottish cups and six league cups whilst at Rangers and winning the league with Dundee United. He was inducted into the Scottish football hall of fame in 2006.

Billy McNeil was the captain of one of the most famous teams in Scottish football history, which was the Lisbon lions where Celtic won the European Cup in 1967. McNeil won league titles with Celtic apart of the famous nine in a row. Also winning seven Scottish cups and 6 Scottish League cups. McNeil has a statue outside of Celtic Park of him holding up the European cup. McNeil managed Celtic on two occasions winning eight trophies.

LM-Davie Cooper

Nicknamed ‘Moody blue’ Cooper is remembered as being one of the best players Scotland has ever or will ever see. Cooper scored his most memorable goal against Celtic in 1979. Playing for three teams in his career across Scotland but he will be remembered for his time at Rangers and Motherwell especially. His ability with the ball at his feet was able to strike fear in any player he came up against throughout his great career. Fir parks north stand has been renamed in Coopers name.

CM-Jim Baxter

Jim Baxter has been voted the third best Rangers player ever by fans. He was capped 34 times for the Scotland national team. ‘Slim Jim’ was able to win   several trophy’s with Rangers throughout his career as well as individual accolades such as being an inaugural member of the Scottish Hall of fame similarly to other players in this team. Laudrup was nicknamed ‘The Great Dane’ and was voted Rangers best foreign player ever. Brian Laudrup. He won five trophies with Rangers throughout his stay. He is a member of both the Scotland and the Denmark hall of fame. The Dane could play in several positions even though he may be played out of position at CM which is where I am playing him. He was utilised as a forward or a midfielder throughout his career and played some of his best football at Rangers.

ST-Henrick Larson

Larson was voted Celtics best ever foreign player by fans in 2002 and has the evidence to back it, he scored 242 goals in 313 appearances for Celtic. he has also had success at teams like Barcelona and the Sweden national team which he has 106 caps for scoring 37 goals.
